Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
I know it doesn't actually work like this, but I generally feel the IFC licenses come out in order of their theatrical release, which technically would suggest Death of Stalin would come before Let the Sunshine In. As it appears Paramount hasn't exercised their option of Death of Stalin, it's probably getting a good release slot from Criterion near the end of the year considering its one of IFC's best performing titles ever (and it's at least somewhat likely to be paired with In the Loop, I guess), and I'd think that the Denis would come a little after that.
Wasn't the word on WKW that Janus' rerelease of Chungking Express was scheduled for September? Seems like it'd be a bit soon for anything to pop up so quickly.

The Death of Stalin is coming out on DVD from Paramount in two weeks though. I don't know if that rules out a Criterion release or not though.Ribs wrote: ↑Mon Jun 11, 2018 1:58 pmI know it doesn't actually work like this, but I generally feel the IFC licenses come out in order of their theatrical release, which technically would suggest Death of Stalin would come before Let the Sunshine In. 45 Years demonstrates that Paramount's option doesn't prevent Criterion from using theirs in the fullness of time, as that one also included a BD weirdly, and just nine months later Criterion put out their own.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
Japan released a Blu-ray back in 2016. From what I remember, it wasn't that good.
Predictions:
- I'll throw one in for Come and See since everybody else is. That film would be an instant buy for me regardless of any discounts.
- A new wave of Janus restorations, like Cold Water, 24 Frames, and Eight Hours Don't Make a Day (maybe it's too early for those last two, though).
- Wong Kar-wai? By November, I hope.
- Plus any of the various titles other members have suggested: After Hours, True Stories, the list goes on...

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
Rosenbaum stated The Magnificent Ambersons was out at November. Since last November was underwhelming I think we will get something great, like the WKW Box Set and maybe an attempt at a restoration of Ambersons like It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. This month:
- Andrei Rublev upgrade
- A Woman Of Paris
- Sixteen Candles or Ferris Bueller's Day Off
- Masculin Feminin upgrade
- (Just because I want more Ray) Rebel Without A Cause

Forgive me if I missed something, but why are most of you predicting Wong's films will come in a set? I'm not saying it's implausible, but it seems I missed something since I read every post (generally).

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
It has become somewhat of a running joke that a WKW box-set is incoming. Not sure where it started, but it does have some plausibility since Janus is known to have quite a few of his releases while he himself has made a few trips to Criterion this year, theoretically recording a few things. I'm not saying a WKW box-set is incoming, but it does have some credence or, at the very least, there are quite a few of his films in the pipeline.Omensetter wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 1:18 pmForgive me if I missed something, but why are most of you predicting Wong's films will come in a set? Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
Kino had issued boxes of Haneke, Kieslowski, and Wong films that all went out of print, and so people have been guessing that Criterion will do a box for the latter despite the fact that they've done no such thing for the first two directors.

Janus also toured a new 4K restoration of In the Mood for Love this year, which is what really sealed it for me (considering both that and Chungking Express have weirdness)

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
I can see Criterion doing Chungking Express and Fallen Angels together and maybe a box of Days of Being Wild, In the Mood for Love (from the new 4K master), and 2046 (though we've had no indication they've wrangled that one from Sony, nor is there any sign of the new digital master it clearly needs). But I find it hard to imagine they'll just toss four or five* Wong films—all but one of them new to Criterion—into a box. I also suspect Janus might like to do something with these titles first; they've handled bookings for Chungking Express, Fallen Angels, and Happy Together for some time, but only Chungking actually appears in their catalog and we've heard rumblings of a new 4K DCP for that one coming later this year.
*The possible fifth title being As Tears Go By, which I don't think has been linked to Janus/Criterion but would be a logical pickup given that it's from the same rightsholders as Days of Being Wild.

Re: Quarantined Monthly Guessing Thread
I got the impression folks were expecting it would be a WKW box because including a new restoration in a box had been the only way they'd upgraded a previously-released BD (i.e. Playtime) with the newer restoration. Since then, they've broken that rule with Monterey Pop.The Fanciful Norwegian wrote: ↑Tue Jun 12, 2018 2:48 pmI can see Criterion doing Chungking Express and Fallen Angels together and maybe a box of Days of Being Wild, In the Mood for Love (from the new 4K master), and 2046 (though we've had no indication they've wrangled that one from Sony, nor is there any sign of the new digital master it clearly needs).
