Hey, that's not where her vagina is supposed to be. Or the eye of Sauron.

Regarding that particular image, I'd guess it's an aesthetic embellishment based upon Guadagnino's intial fascination with the film:
I want to pay homage because watching Suspiria by Dario Argento has been a pivotal experience for me. I think it even made part of me what it is. I saw Suspiria when I was 14, but before seeing the actual film on TV, I had seen for the first time the poster of this girl dancer with the reclining head severed and the blood flowing from her torso to the sex when I was ten, and I was shocked! I had my own internet in my head, and I was going back to the image constantly.

I don’t much like post-modernism because post-modernist has become the basket in which every mediocre person can shuffle things and pretend to do something significant, and we could also mention who use post-modernism in this way—maybe we shouldn’t. I know it’s post-modern to say, ‘I want to pay homage to the emotion I felt when I saw the movie,’ but truthfully, I want to understand what is the concept of horror in motherhood, which I think is the element that struck me when I was 14.

I can see why that's NSFW. Unmistakable nipple outline there.

That image reminds me of Videodrome.

I didn’t recognize Dakota Johnson in that picture. But then I’ve only seen her trailers and not anything she’s actually done.

Cymbeline is great, and probably even more perverse and alienating as an adaptation than this will be, so she's had practice at this sort of thing

First teaser trailer. No dialogue or spoilers for those seeking to avoid them. Really digging the look of the film, which could have only failed by imitating the original. Easy to see what Guadagnino meant when he said the visual elements leaned heavily into Fassbinder. Can't wait to hear more of the score. Obviously different from Goblin, which would again have been foolish to imitate. What they've shown here leaves me with a lot to be optimistic about. I say that as someone who considers Suspiria one of the great cinematic experiences and A Bigger Splash one of the best films of the last decade (at least).

Looks like Tilda Swinton is channeling Pina Bausch.

Apparently Swinton plays three roles in the film, including (allegedly)

Well said individual wouldn't have had any issue with I imagine. Interesting if true.

She's already played that 'character' before in a fantastic way which adds to my excitement.

As someone who hasn't fully liked a Guadagnino film yet (A Bigger Splash was the closest I got) and who isn't sure a remake of a film as distinctively great as Suspiria is warranted, I still find myself excited for this because Guadagnino's sensibilities COULD make for a rich and striking horror film and the trailer seems to bear that out.

That said, 152 minutes does give me pause. Hopefully it is justified.

Wagner's Das Rheingold is about the same length, without intermissions. It's probably too long for a horror film.

But maybe it will work--we'll see!

Not sure why people are running scared of a long horror film. Rosemary’s Baby runs for 136 minutes and the credits were a lot shorter then.

I think the only thing NOT giving me pause now is the fact that it's so long. I don't see the point of remaking a masterpiece like Suspiria, but with that length the film is likely to be completely different. So, I went from being actively disinterested to being slightly interested now...

Yeah, I can see that perspective, too.

I'm just getting weary of films that get unwieldy with their plotting and don't know how to kill their darlings. Feels like so often these days I am watching movies with a litany of scenes that would have ended up on the cutting room floor in yesteryear.

For instance, I have no problem with the slow pacing of Blade Runner 2049, but I do have a major problem with some of the plot threads it decided to waste time on.

The length of this Suspiria film is right in the same ballpark. If that length is used to slow scenes down, deliver character details, maximize atmosphere, etcetera... Great. I'm just a little wary of ungainly plot machinations, because that seems to be the thing with modern genre movies these days (hi, Hereditary and Marvel movies and Mission Impossible and Incredibles 2 and so on). That said, I guess I don't have any reason to think Guadagnino would be taking Suspiria down that road, and the trailer does seem very promising that a lot of this is going to be about the atmosphere.

Two and a half hours of this is going to be an interesting experiment. I can't think any horror film that IS that long actually. My hope is that Guadagnino doesn't blow his load too early making the rest of the film a slog of grotesque images. We'll see!

The Shining was released at 144 minutes, but then Kubrick cut it down to under 2 hours for Europe, and apparently favoured that cut.

It was 146 minutes originally, but only people who caught it in the first fortnight saw that version.

Does The Kingdom count as a horror film? Because it was released at circa 280 minutes in British cinemas - and, more relevantly, I wasn't bored for a millisecond.

I see they're already going the Sleuth route with "Lutz Ebersdorf"

The recent South Korean film The Wailing was also over 150 minutes and existed mostly to show about twenty minutes of grotesqueness. Hell, even some people liked it. There's also the excellent television movie Frankenstein: The True Story.

I am mostly liking from this that it does not appear to be trying to copy the aesthetic or content of the Argento film too closely and instead building its own style (especially in the brief flashes of modern dance-like sequences and costumes which might push it closer to Black Swan territory). I also wonder if the length of the film and the mention of all three of the Mothers means that it might not just focus solely on Mater Suspiriorum. And will Tilda Swinton end up playing all three?
