One of my Facebook "friends" did that yesterday, and it took a lot of effort not to get into a word war with him. I made a Facebook account last week, and I already hate Facebook.domino harvey wrote:If one really wants their blood to boil, go check the Reddit tracking the phony social activists of Tumblr, many of whom had a field day complaining about another rich white guy dying being more important than _________. Yeesh, the Robin Williams complaints must have fallen pretty far back, because all I see is stuff like some guy complaining about getting called out on hitting on a 16 year old

Re: Robin Williams (1951-2014)
It's funny how even Fox News backpedaled on the "cowardly" quip Shepard Smith made. Fortunately from what I can tell, Rush Limbaugh just dug himself in deeper today. To politicize someone who's idea of political humor was to invoke Disney's Hall of Presidents is, to my eyes, nothing but mere trolling.

Re: Robin Williams (1951-2014)
What's weird about anyone trying to politicize Williams' death just because he was a liberal is that his appeal was arguably far stronger with midwest flyover sensibilities, most of which are conservative by default. Commentators for the extreme right are so far out of touch that they don't even realize what a bad idea it is to attack someone so beloved to so many in their coterie

Re: Robin Williams (1951-2014)
Calling suicide 'cowardly' in 2014- particularly a suicide that's the culmination of a long and very impressive fight against a mental disease that can be as debilitating as many of the more visible physical ones- is such a shockingly repellant act of pissing on a grave that it's surprising coming even from Fox News, particularly from Shepard Smith, erstwhile bearer of a reputation for being 'the good one' there.

I thought his reputation was more benignly dumb like an anti-Steve Doocy.

While all the more tragic, the logic of the act makes more sense now.

A lot of people get diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease without hanging themselves in their bedroom. The "logic" of the act remains unchanged - Williams was suffering from depression and was unable to cope with the feelings that were overwhelming him. It's dangerous to just ignore that now that we know that he'd been diagnosed with Parkinson's.

Re: Robin Williams (1951-2014)
This is a really unwise topic to turn into a debate. The man is dead, at his own hand, and based on the evidence we (as people who did not intimately know him) have we can only guess at any or all of the factors which went into his fatal decision. Your guess/reason is not better or worse than anyone else's, and maybe it's not our place to surmise why someone does something like this anyways.

Billy Crystal is doing a tribute on Monday's Emmy telecast. Wish them all the best on it.

Re: Robin Williams (1951-2014)
That's absolutely heartbreaking to read. I skipped over some of it because it was so painful as a lifelong fan.
"If only Robin could have met you. He would have loved you—not just because he was a genius and enjoyed science and discovery, but because he would have found a lot of material within your work to use in entertaining his audiences, including the troops. In fact, the most repeat character role he played throughout his career was a doctor, albeit different forms of practice."

I can't help but think of his role in "Deconstructing Harry," where he watches himself "lose focus," but is unable to do anything about it.

TimeLife is putting out a 22 DVD set of all of Robin Williams' HBO specials, the Come Inside My Mind documentary from this year, and a lot of TV clips.

Re: Robin Williams (1951-2014)
This looks great. Don't get me wrong, he's been in some great movies but I think he really shone more in these interviews and stand-up specials than he ever did in film. I have some bias which you can read in the prior post I made here, but the Met special is his real triumph in that regard. The takes on life, playing off the gaudy atmosphere and the honesty in it still stands up today.
