Nate Parker’s latest film also won an award, though not one given by the jury. This is indeed a day for staying away from all social media

They also just named Woody Allen "Man of the Year"

They also retroactively named "Rock 'n Roll Part 2" the song of the summer.

I do question but respect their decision to award Kevin Spacey Best Actor for that apron-wearing YouTube response video he made

We are being referenced as the dudebros reacting cheerfully for this Venice edition.

I mean, the last time someone unironically used the term “SJW” here, I’m pretty sure a moderator banned them, so I don’t think we quite fit the profile... but it is unsurprising that someone upset about this win would only see reaction to it as fitting into a binary

The person who wrote the above post also accuses the forum of being misogynist and being highly elitist snobs in our taste. I'm sensing this person is targeting this forum as having a consensus against the Film Twitter paradigm of moralization on the level of Evangelical Christians.

They’ve always been a little over the top leaning into that direction over there (and note we’re not saying the site, so as to avoid claims we’re encouraging brigading— not that anyone here would, obviously) but now that it’s the time of year when I start checking in, it seems a lot worse on the whole than usual

May I ask who wrote those tweets?

My issue at hand more than anything is that I want Film Twitter peeps to realize they aren't the movers and shakers they think they are and that people who like movies exist on a broad spectrum. Joker winning something, anything would hopefully you know, make them realize this.

They’re not tweets, they’re from another discussion forum

The fall award season is going to be immensely insufferable this year with a comic book movie that people think is going to cause more violence in America, debated between the woke Twitter crowd and the incels. It's going to make the Green Book discourse look tame in comparison.

Not going to disclose any information about the person who wrote that post as we need to keep the banter at minimum. I'll just say it's a awards forum that gets a little outrageous at times, especially when it comes to actresses.

First Farrelly gets an Oscar, now Phillips gets a Golden Lion. I look forward to the Wayans brothers taking home the Palme d’Or in 2020...

I used to think that Phillips' career was a tragedy, but now I realize... it's a comedy

The Wayans Brothers retroactively deserve any award they want for In Living Color (well, probably not a GLAAD one), don't drag them into this!

Well Damon was in Bamboozled so sometimes they'll fluke a good decision.

Look, just see this and Polanski winning as a gift aimed squarely against the obnoxious reign of Film Twitter. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of folks
The irony of them being insufferably mean spirited and toxic while complaining about those things in the film community is certainly palpable. Couldn't agree with you more here. I hope the notion that their opinions exist within just that ecosystem brings them down a notch or two.
Perfect term for such people (and this overall phenomenon): “crybullies.”

But that’s what the whole “cancelled” phenomenon has been about for nearly three years now: media liberals feeling powerless over Trump’s election despite the fact that he violated every social norm they believed in. So what we’ve seen is those same people desperately try to prove how much they matter and how much those social norms matter by “canceling” as many people as they have the power to cancel. People like like Louis CK and Woody Allen are major obsessions specifically because their entire careers are almost solely supported by those same coastal liberals and thus they have major power over them.

Could they “cancel” the Rock? Robert Downey Jr? Or as we’ve seen them try recently Scarlett Johansson? Extremely doubtful.

Louis CK had a history of shitty behaviour, he deserved what he got. Johansson just says a few things that the media/social media consensus disagrees with.

This is going to make a mountain of money, all but guaranteed to double its budget on opening weekend. Have to think the studio has many more of these stand-alone character study types in the pipeline ready to go.

Discussions on GamerGate moved here. Any further discussions on Cancel Culture not directly related to this film and the reception it is receiving should go in the Weinstein thread
