Insatiable
Incredibly stupid concept has a thin actress wearing a fat suit, getting "hot" after needing her mouth wired shut following an assault, then coming back to enact revenge on her classmates with her cool new figure
Maybe the worst trailer for a Netflix original series I've seen, and that's a lower and lower bar

Guess it's my turn to not see what the big deal is. Looks like any other teen show...

Re: Netflix Originals
I was waiting for you, in particular, to fulfill your role as the calm pond in a world of raging seas against what is perceived as tonedeaf or problematic content. I would agree with you if this was 20 years ago.
But catching up on the response to the trailer for this show, it seems like it's made quite the social media splash (how's that for continuing a metaphor?). I wonder if it'll get any more than a quiet dump onto the service including a decline of a 2nd season pick-up at this point.
It does seem pretty wild that when people are correctly lobbying for more female directors and showrunners, this is what got pitched and made by a woman, absolutely a story that was just begging to break through the wall of the patriarchy and finally be told.
Someone at least claiming to be said creator and showrunner is doing her damnedest to defend the show against these criticisms with what seems like a hastily created Twitter account. It's more than a little pathetic, considering that anyone treading in these waters (somebody stop me) must have known what the reaction to this concept was going to be in 2018.

What do you mean by twenty years ago? I guess I'll agree with Dom and say something like Scream Queens or any generic CW teen dramedy seems fairly indistinguishable. It's not like this is like that Heathers show.

Re: Netflix Originals
I don't think teenage culture is remotely as hung up with issues of fat shaming and body image as they were then. Maybe it's just me being on the outside looking in, but young women seem to me to be (admirably) so far evolved from tearing one another down for their weight than they were even a few years ago, and the media centered around teenagers (like Teen Vogue, etc) has taken steps toward that same type of progressive viewpoint. So to see a show about a teenager reaping the benefits of a liquid diet to get revenge on antiquated 'bully' stereotypes feels very outdated to me. Maybe I'm just way off, I know we have some teenagers and forever teenagers here that might have a better read on this.

Re: Netflix Originals
I don't have any quantitative evidence, but as someone that works with teens (does that make me a forever teen) fat shaming certainly still exists in a prominent way as does body shaming on the whole. Even if it was no longer the point of bullying du jour the concept of being bullied and wanting to take revenge is a fairly universal concept. Additionally being out of date, if that is the torch being held, doesn't seem like a reason to have an uproar.

Re: Netflix Originals
Ha, by forever teenager I mostly meant those who consume a ton of current YA content, though I suppose that's still often going to be made by adults who might not be entirely on the pulse of what's going on in actual teenage culture right now (Eighth Grade, at least from the trailer, looked like it got close to really trying to dig into it with an eye for accuracy, though).
Not all uproars are created equal in my opinion. There an be uproars that aren't calling for the heads of the creators of something, or calling for it to be censored. But just ones that point out that maybe it's problematic (for lack of a less buzzy word) and tonedeaf. To me, when this argument is made in a reasoned way like some people already have with this\, it seems, that sort of criticism can be useful and shouldn't always be looked at like the sort of uproar that might totally bring something or someone to its knees.
All I would ask is: Who is this for? Fat teenage girls aren't looking to sit around pondering what it might be like if they adopted a traditionally attractive body, they either don't give a shit or already spend much of their time doing just that and it's not a happy, candy-colored way of spending their time.
Fine, I'll do a threadsplit. You win, forum gods.

Re: Netflix Originals
Perhaps those young people motivated enough to speak out against something like this are, but you're getting a false representation of the overall mood from those who make it their business to publicly advertise their "body acceptance" stance. I work with teens, and while there are plenty of progressive strides that have been made from when I was a teen, this isn't one I've seen change so much that it renders a story like this alien. That said, I have zero interest in watching this show, but not because of its message. It just looks like a dumb teen comedy I'd never watch anyways.
I am however reminded of the episode of Daria where Sandi from the Fashion Club breaks her leg and gets fat and is ostracized from the FC as a result. Primarily because when the N aired reruns and did selective editing on episodes to render them less offensive to younger viewers, they didn't even bother to ever air that episode given the message it sent. However, I don't think the episode was wrong in the slightest, it just highlighted an uncomfortable truth. This may be rubbing up against people for a similar reason: we like to think we're better than this, and our kids are better than this. Truth is, this is reality still, and not at all implausible

In that case definitely not a forever teen (says the man who has been cozying up to Roald Dahl at night lately).mfunk9786 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 20, 2018 11:47 amHa, by forever teenager I mostly meant those who consume a ton of current YA content, though I suppose that's still often going to be made by adults who might not be entirely on the pulse of what's going on in actual teenage culture right now (Eighth Grade, at least from the trailer, looked like it got close to really trying to dig into it with an eye for accuracy, though).

I'd heard of CDAN before, but clicking that link really sends you down a rabbit hole doesn't it? I never realised that James Dean faked his own death, Anthony Bourdain was murdered by ... someone, and that Drake didn't know who Lily Allen was.

Re: Insatiable
Thank you for that, I knew I'd heard the title "Insatiable" used for some kind of entertainment before, but I didn't remember it was for the Marilyn Chambers film. That was driving me nuts.

Not that I think a petition like this is anything but 'good publicity,' but I think the idea is that they don't want to see anything besides a trailer

If they really want to protest they should cancel their Netflix subscriptions
