2016 Criterion Forum Awards
IMPORTANT NOTE
Voting starts once the last release of December is unleashed on the populace, December 13th. You may post in this thread before that, but any lists posted early will, as always, be deleted and your message replaced with Gossip Girl GIFs.
Please either post your votes in this thread or PM me, domino harvey. You may or may not vote in most categories, but you must provide a ranked Top Five to be counted at all. No ties will be counted in any category, so make the hard decision if you want your vote to matter.

Re: 2016 Criterion Forum Awards
How fortunate, I love Gossip Girl ! (though I would have preferred One Tree Hill gifs instead).
Any joke aside, there isn't a lot of boxset this year, but it might be quite hard to choose between them 3.

Re: 2016 Criterion Forum Awards
I believe these are all the bonus films this year. Documentaries are tricky--I'm intentionally leaving out made-for-DVD ones or making-of's unless they're made by a big name or appear to have screened somewhere.
Giuseppe De Santis (Bitter Rice)
Another Day, Another Time (Inside Llewyn Davis)
Sunday (Inside Llewyn Davis)
Diary of Yunbogi (Death by Hanging)
Nice and Friendly (The Kid)
Le Coup du berger (Paris Belongs to Us)
Likely Consequence (A Brighter Summer Day)
Our Time, Our Story (A Brighter Summer Day)
Out in the Woods (A Poem Is a Naked Person)
I'm a Stranger Here Myself (In a Lonely Place)
Robert Altman's Players (The Player)
Same Player Shoots Again (Alice in the Cities)
Silver City Revisited (Alice in the Cities)
On purge bébé (La Chienne)
Les Temps morts (Fantastic Planet)
Les Escargots (Fantastic Planet)
Laloux sauvage (Fantastic Planet)
Cloud Phenomena of Maloja (Clouds of Sils Maria)
King Hu: 1932-1997 (A Touch of Zen)
Momma Don't Allow (A Taste of Honey)
Portrait: Orson Welles (The Immortal Story)
Val Lewton: The Man in the Shadows (Cat People)
A Short Film About Killing (Dekalog)
A Short Film About Love (Dekalog)
Making of "Dreams" (Akira Kurosawa's Dreams)
Shogun Assassin (Lone Wolf and Cub)
"Silent documentary from 1939 about the making of samurai swords" (Lone Wolf and Cub)
Pharos of Chaos (The Asphalt Jungle)
And I believe these are all the releases with eligible commentaries:

Re: 2016 Criterion Forum Awards
I know the Richard Cranium Award is pretty much all sewn up for this year (barring something absolutely spectacular happening in the coming months), but it would be nice if people could nominate any other contenders, with links, so as to create at least the semblance of competition.
Should Likely Consequence on A Brighter Summer Day be added to swo's bonus films list? It's in a bit of a grey area, but it's a lot more interesting than the doc on that disc.

I second the motion. It's certainly not a short or shallow feature.zedz wrote:Should Likely Consequence on A Brighter Summer Day be added to swo's bonus films list? It's in a bit of a grey area, but it's a lot more interesting than the doc on that disc.

Primary, both cuts has new commentary, I believe, and it is outstanding.

Re: 2016 Criterion Forum Awards
It's a non-scene-specific assemblage of audio recorded in 1961. I don't think it had been released previously though...

Yes though it's usually the thicker books that garner most of the votes.

The Kennedy Films of Robert Drew & Associates
MOST UNNECESSARY RELEASE
Ingrid Berman: In Her Own Words (I'm sure it's *good* and everything, but come on, this warrants a BD because it was a Janus title and Weiner doesn't because it was IFC?)
MOST FLAWED RELEASE
Dekalog (yes, it a fantastic and wonderful release, but the fact that the Arrow is so much better really shows how much more could have been done; but we have both so it's alright!)
BEST NON-CRITERION RELEASES
The Rainer Werner Fassbinder Collection (I've been going through this *super* slowly, but it's just absolutely STACKED with material and I feel like it's been slept on as the best Arrow set of the year)
Dekalog and Other TV Works (basically does every single thing you can possibly imagine right)
Three Brothers (transfer and film are great, obviously, but I must once again point to the absolutely *amazing* essay in the booklet, which is pretty much the main reason to buy this, it is thorough to the point of lunacy)
Literally every other Arrow set, because the Academy range of box sets have been nothing but fantastic from beginning to end
Rocco and His Brothers
Man With a Movie Camera and Other Works by Dziga Vertov (just fantastic, there's really nothing more to say)
Bound for Glory (yes, this will be the one TT title I opt to list; I'm just so thrilled to be able to have this on BD, even if it the actual release may not be super up to snuff and will likely be improved upon by MoC or someone in due course; this is one I'm not going to mind the double-dip on.)
I haven't checked out Napoleon yet but I expect it won't need my vouching for it.

excuse me, best release refers to the bluray as a film, or overall as a film + release (quality, extras, cover, package etc.)?

well, i don't know if my post will qualify but i have to say this:
out of all those releases I've seen 16 films, and out of these i've watched 4 Criterion transfers.
So, my top 5 will be based mainly on reviews of these 16 blurays.
BEST RELEASE:
1. One-Eyed Jacks
2. McCabe and Mrs Miller
3. Only Angels Have Wings
4. Bitter Rice
5. The New World (this would be first but it loses points due to the not so good quality of 2 out of 3 cuts)
BEST COVER
ATouch of Zen
WORST COVER
Clouds of Sils Maria
BEST DISCOVERY
Bitter Rice
MOST UNNECESSARY RELEASE
Dr. Strangelove
MOST FLAWED RELEASE
Fantastic Planet
(the reason of my bluray.com demise! Revised to death by Ritrovata to their usual color palette)
i don't see this category in the first post but since other members voted i found it a great idea.
my votes are based on anticipation of release in combination (or not) in most cases with the reviews:
BEST NON-CRITERION RELEASES
1. Black Christmas (1974) (Shout)( ONLY IF the mono audio is fixed! if it's not, i delete this, all move up a place and so I've provided a 6th one that becomes 5th)
2. Dekalog (Arrow)
3. Magnum P.I. (Fabulous)
4. The Thing (Shout)
5. Iphigenia (Olive) (marks the first ever release of a pre-1980 Greek film on bluray worldwide. CONGRATULATIONS Olive!!! edit: as member sedz posted later "Nikos Papatakis' 1967 Oi Voskoi (Thanos & Despina) was released by Gaumont on BluRay last year.")
(6. Anastasia (TT))
