The Tree of Wooden Clogs cover looks brighter and sharper, and the two images are slightly different than the one that was previously posted.

Sean Phillips has consistently done some of the best Criterion (and Arrow) covers in recent years. Mildred Pierce is another solid effort!

I often find myself disappointed with box art that is revealed later than the announcement, and if they keep that cover the trend continues.

I thought she and him as well. Looks more like a sunny side up egg though.

Almost no casual buyer browsing in a shop is going to make the connection as to what set of films that cover is referring to.
And surely The Before Trilogy is a series of films with wider market appeal than many other Criterion releases. I can't help but think Criterion are just shooting themselves in the foot.

I quite like the cover - it evokes a 1970s paperback cover (not that that's especially appropriate!) - but it does seem a little commercially reckless.bdsweeney wrote:Almost no casual buyer browsing in a shop is going to make the connection as to what set of films that cover is referring to.

I have a very hard time believing this release could come out without crediting Julie Delpy or Ethan Hawke on the covers. Seems like a sure-fire way to attract wider attention.

I completely agree. In fact, I reached out to him the other day and he sent me (without request) the full-res cover art of Mildred Pierce before Criterion's labelling and titling. If anyone is interested in a copy, I'm sure he wouldn't mind me forwarding it also.ianungstad wrote:Sean Phillips has consistently done some of the best Criterion (and Arrow) covers in recent years. Now I just want Criterion to mock-up some Before Trilogy artwork that is the exact same but with gigantic images of Delpy and Hawke's faces floating above the sun.

I bet that looks a lot better when you peel the BOX ART FINAL sticker and realize that the two faces are part of a larger portrait once you slide the cover off.

All of their worst covers should come packaged with a "Box Art Final" banner.

I think that will work for the casual buyer.

I can't even begin to count all the times I haven't bought something because I wasn't sure if the box art might be changed like the next day or something.

Nah, actually, the sticker hides a big "RT Fresh" logo.mfunk9786 wrote:I bet that looks a lot better when you peel the BOX ART FINAL sticker and realize that the two faces are part of a larger portrait once you slide the cover off.

From Amazon. Certainly doesn't look temporary. I mean, it's awful, but the image seems final. And gigantic, sorry. Not sure how to remedy that bit without the ability to resize the image handy right now.
