KLSC are releasing Lewis Milestone's The North Star and it's re-edit, Armored Attack, the former will feature an Adrian Martin commentary, the latter Steve Mitchell and Steven Jay Rubin. looks like a pretty cool package. Kino is the only US based label who have answered this forum (and others') pleas for more Martin tracks - he's been on a pretty steady roll with them, which I'm sure will please many of us

It was previously released by Olive on Blu with both cuts as well, though they front-lined the later recut and relegated the original version to a bonus feature for some reason. I thought I'd written it up on here but I can't find anything but it's sadly not that good (though I liked the merciless and brutal attack scene on the road)

Kino Insider answered some questions yesterday at the Blu-ray.com forum:

1. Any more two disc releases with multiple cuts (similar to Macbeth and The North Star) in the current Paramount deal?

2. Are there any additional films that were formerly released as Olive Signature Editions in the current Paramount deal?

I'm sure there will be another 2-disc release, so many films have multiple cuts.

I don't think we have any other signature releases, Quiet Man and Rio Grand were not available. At this point, I don't think we've asked for many of the others.

Macbeth and NS were picked up because new transfers were done.

Regarding the Paramount deal:
1- Is the new to Bluray disc from the 40’s a originally produced by Republic movie?

2- As for the 50’s new to Bluray discs are there any Oscar winning performances?
I don't think so we have any new to Blu-ray 40s Republic titles.

There are at least 2 1950s Oscar Winners first time on Blu-ray in the U.S., maybe more.

There will be a Republic Pictures noir box set, they have picked up 4 or 5 Paramount titles released by Shout/Scream

Does anyone know what the rights situation is like for the 1972 film, The Man with James Earl Jones?
I think another label has this, the same is true with Leadbelly, which used to have a large music clearance fee attached to it, but I think is now cleared.

Yes, it was one of Shout's first Paramount titles, and it has been OOP for a long time. No word on if anyone has it (I assume if it was available one of the various boutiques would have licensed it by now.)

Odd no one asked about that. They mostly were asking about Shout titles since four of Shout's Paramount titles (Graveyard Shift, The Tenant, Danger: Diabolik, & Orca) are going OOP and, I think, they want to know if they should wait or pick up the Shout Blu-rays before they disappear.

I didn't much like A Rage in Harlem but it seems like a good fit for KLSC.

Interestingly, I just watched an old episode of Siskel and Ebert where they did something I'd never seen (and they admitted so too)-- they both changed their thumbs down to a thumbs up the week after their initial review on the program because they'd accidentally been shown a longer working cut and the final, shorter release cut they watched addressed the problems they had with it. The problems I had with it could not be fixed unless they cut it to the length of one of the those Fallen Angels episodes, but an interesting footnote and perhaps an indicator that the cut footage could be included

They’ve been amenable to discussing sales figures at times, particularly with OOP titles. They told me that Losey’s Figures in a Landscape sold horribly, but that it was a personal favourite of theirs.

Kazan and Preminger not being big movers is interesting given that they’re releasing The Visitors.

I just saw Bad Girl at MoMA, I think my second time seeing it - I still like it but it's definitely a cut or two below my favorite Borzage films.

Fixed Bayonets is probably my pick though sadly it's also on the low end of that list.

A personal favorite Kino release for me as well! I saluted their heroic efforts in releasing this obscure gem by paying full price for it shortly after it was released.

Makes sense, I get the impression that the average KLSC collector is more interested in scooping OOP copies of Celtic Pride on eBay for $100+ than pay $10 to try out a board favorite here
