I sold my DVD in 2009 when there were first rumors of an imminent Blu-ray release and it has been absent from my collection ever since despite being an all-time favorite.

You think some of his shorts might make it on to this release?

It's been streaming on Netflix for a while, and that looks sufficiently better than the DVD version - but this should be pretty mind-boggling. Hey Criterion - any chance you might want to debut 4K combo packs with this month's slate of releases?

Yes - Blossoms and Blood, Mattress Man Commercial, and Couch. None of the others will ever be released, unless it's on a Hard Eight disc and Anderson has loosened up significantly on that early stuff ever seeing the light of day in an official capacity.

Excellent news! Just this past weekend I finally took this off of the DVD shelf and put it into the "For Sale" box, so maybe that triggered something in the cosmos.

Anderson said it was being restored a few years ago, but couldn't confirm details of a future release.

I really hope they get Anderson back in the recording booth for this (he said earlier that he was open to recording a technical commentary for this), I just listened to his solo Boogie Nights commentary and it's a shame that he doesn't do that for all of his movies.

Some of the more recent ones seem like they're better off without that sort of thing, the films just don't seem to lend themselves to it (maybe except for Inherent Vice). Something tells me that because of the open wounds associated with it, The Master will likely never see a commentary, in particular.

Sony doesn't have home video on Hard Eight/Sydney anymore but it seems to be a natural choice.

This is PTA's second film in the collection - Boogie Nights was done for Laserdisc in 1998.

I was just wondering the same. Very odd that there isn't a "More!" in that case where the essay can be added later.

I'm surprised that it appears Anderson just supervised the transfer and didn't provide any new interviews or commentary.

I wouldn't worry about the lack of an essay listed - as this seems to have happened quite a few times this year already, but the actual release always ends up with a booklet. Makes one wonder what the last non-Eclipse title to not have a booklet/leaflet/insert was?

Still feels like plenty, especially if the shorts and deleted scenes are redone in HD

Squid and the Whale is the same - I hope this is just a mistake and not the start of a new trend.

Is that true? I don't recall that happening at all, and I'd have thought it would have come up at some point considering we all freak out when it is listed as a booklet rather than a leaflet.

I love the scene of Emily Watson nervously pacing around her apartment waiting for Sandler to show up that's folded into the Blossoms & Blood feature, really wish it was left in the film. And you'd think if they're making a big deal out of special features for the artist they'd, you know, incorporate that art into the cover instead of, uh, that

Is there a chance that the "additional artwork" forms the written/printed supplements and there's just not a written essay included?

(Weird cost-saving measure by Criterion if so, considering this is a film surely so many critics and academics would fall over themselves to write about)

If you haven't watched Back Beyond, with 20 minutes of material left out of The Master, I would highly recommend that as well.

Can you say what you're referring to here? I didn't realize PTA was unhappy with that film.

Everything in this Dream from Inherent Vice features the original ending from the novel amongst other unused material, but tragically omitted the filmed scene with the vision of Thomas Jefferson. It's considerably shorter than these others for some reason but I really admire the composition as a way to present this stuff.

I believe they're just referring to the personal relationship between him and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, which would possibly make revisiting the film difficult for him in the near future.

I think he's very happy with the film, I just don't know if he'd be bending over backwards to fill two hours with recollections of his experience making it with Philip Seymour Hoffman, for public consumption

You're on a roll today, dom.

Maybe those wounds extend to his lack of participation in any new extras for this, too.
