DVDBeaver on the Bluray.
This is the first Godard film saw more than 10 years ago. Although the Blu-ray captures look nice, I'm surprised how well the old DVD still holds up.

A Romeo & Juliet reference is prominent here and in Breathless. This paired with the recurring deaths of main characters in early Godard suggests a major influence that has gone relatively under the radar. Has anyone else noticed more references/influence in Godard's other work?

Question for anyone who has the Criterion Blu-ray or the French Gaumont:

Around 19 minutes - 20 minutes in when Arthur and Odile are talking during a break from English class, does the black and white suddenly turn slightly green or purple in hue?

I don't notice anything of that sort on the Criterion Blu-Ray

Neither do I.

Also, I saw the DCP restoration playing at Film Forum. Came back home hours later and popped in the Criterion Blu-Ray for comparison (which again notes that it's derived from the 2010 Gaumont restoration), and honestly, it looks like it could have been the same exact restoration. It's not, but it looks very, very similar.

The only thing that's different is that the DCP might have a bit less grain. I'm not sure at all, but while watching the DCP, I do recall that during the same scene mentioned in the last two posts (20 minutes in when Arthur and Odile are talking during a break from English class), the film looked so clean, it almost felt like a video recording. It didn't look blocky or waxy, the details were very fine, but the texture itself looked really, really clean. On the BD, the grain is noticeable, but it was still a very clean looking image, especially for a film of this vintage, so who knows, it's possibly the way it was originally.

Just asking because of what seemed to be a problem on the BFI Blu-ray and apparently the French Blu-ray.
dvdcompare review wrote: There is an anomaly in one particular scene though. Around 19 minutes in during the classroom break scene while Arthur and Odile are conversing, the black and white suddenly turns so slightly green in tint, and later slightly purple in tint. This only seems to occur during the particular scene and whether this is part of the restored Gaumont master is unknown.

Update: The BFI has stated the slight color shift was part of the original master provided by Gaumont France.
It's minor, but may prove distracting for some. Seems the Criterion does not have this issue.

I just checked my Criterion BD and indeed couldn't find any similar color shift during this sequence (which is from about 18 to 21 min). Maybe Criterion corrected that during QC ? It seems their BD is slightly darker than the Gaumont one already.

I presume you would not even notice this if you turned the saturation right down in your player or on your monitor?

It seems like a fluctuation which is not very intense, so I would guess turning down the saturation would allow to make it totally invisible.
If it's a more intense one, it would probably give you some brightness fluctuation.

I just completed a rewatch of Band of Outsiders. In the end narration it mentions a sequel that would see the remaining two characters and their adventures in South America. Was this idea ever close to being realized? If so did parts of it end up as bits in his other films?

Pretty sure it's a joke considering he also mentions technicolour.

Partly joke. I was always under the impression that the sequel is/was Pierrot le Fou.

Throughout the late '60s and '70s Godard got funding promising such sequels to hits so at least on paper that's not too ridiculous.

Right, it must be be a joke on “James Bond will return...” kind of thing. I would think the South America part was the giveaway. Did Godard ever do anything outside of Europe? I suppose Letter to Jane is an actual direct sequel.

He had that whole thing in Mozambique but I don't think any video came out of that, and theoretically you could say Godard's lectures in Toronto were the impetus for Histoire (s).
